Building Community Through Engineering

When Engineering Meets Purpose

At NOHMIS, we believe that engineering is more than just calculations and concrete, it’s about creating structures that strengthen communities. Recently, our team had the privilege to contribute to a meaningful effort: the design of a custom wood-framed gazebo for Peyton’s Eagle Scout Service Project at Children’s Harbor. The new gazebo stands as a beacon of community and comfort, a space where kids and teenagers can relax, study, and simply “vibe” together. More than just a structure, it is a symbol of peace and connection designed specifically for youth who lack a dedicated environment of their own. As per Peyton, the ultimate objective was to ensure that “kids who don’t have the same opportunities as I did growing up… actually get to have something that they can call their spot, their place.”

Engineering for Community and Safety

Our role in this community-driven initiative was to provide structural engineering design services to ensure that the gazebo was built safely, efficiently, and in compliance with local building codes.

The NOHMIS team developed the foundation and framing design, ensuring the structure could withstand South Florida’s climate while maintaining a welcoming aesthetic. Using pressure-treated Southern Pine wood and reinforced concrete footings, we balanced beauty with durability, allowing the gazebo to stand strong for years to come.

Every design element, from the base slab to the roof framing, was planned with precision to make sure the structure would remain safe and stable during high winds and seasonal weather common in South Florida.

Designing for Florida’s Coastal Conditions

Building outdoor structures in South Florida requires an understanding of the environment — high humidity, salt exposure, and hurricane-level winds. Our engineers designed the gazebo’s foundation and framing system to handle these challenges, integrating:

  • Reinforced concrete footings for stability and load-bearing capacity
  • Wind-resistant framing design that complies with the Florida Building Code
  • Treated lumber to resist moisture, decay, and pests

By combining technical expertise with community purpose, this project reflects the resilience and care that NOHMIS brings to every design — no matter the scale.

Empowering the Next Generation

Working on Peyton’s Eagle Scout Service Project was a reminder of how engineering and youth leadership can come together to make a lasting impact. We were honored to play a part in supporting a project that not only enhances a community space but also celebrates a young leader’s commitment to service.

Projects like this show how thoughtful design and engineering can enrich environments that serve children, families, and local organizations — ensuring that spaces are as safe as they are meaningful.

Community-Focused Engineering, Built to Last

At NOHMIS, we approach every project — from private residences to community spaces — with the same level of detail and dedication. We take pride in helping South Florida communities grow stronger through reliable structural design, inspections, and architectural engineering solutions.

Our involvement in projects like the Children’s Harbor gazebo underscores our commitment to blending technical excellence with social purpose — because great engineering should always serve people first.
